then and now: the ozone layer
- Antarctic hole:
- Since the beginning of the 1980s, an ozone hole has developed over Antarctica during
the southern spring (September to November) resulting in a decrease in ozone
concentration of up to 70%
- Why the Antarctic and not the N. Pole?
- high wind, cold air vortex, extreme low temperatures better for CFC influence
- the Arctic has more irregular land masses and mountains that block
circumpolar winds
- biggest ever in 2005
- 24 million km-squared (~the size of N. America)
- Can be small one year and large the next due to stratospheric variations
- drops still expected
- Recently (Feb 2013), satellites have shown that the ozone hole over Antarctica is the
smallest seen in the past decade, though there are usually fluctuations and seasonal
variations
